Engineering the Next Generation of Fibre-Based Construction

The Precinct is a nationally significant, multi-user, advanced manufacturing facility being designed and developed to transform Australia’s plantation timber into engineered wood products and prefabricated building components.

Via a series of integrated feasibility studies, The Precinct aims to manufacture high-quality, low carbon, prefabricated dwellings and dwelling components at industrial scale.

Building on the success of the industry-led Hardwood Timber Manufacturing Hub feasibility - which is supporting commercialisation and scaling of Australia’s new Eucalyptus globulus glued laminated timber (glulam or GLT) product - the Precinct plans to further extend the Green Triangle’s forestry and manufacturing strengths into a fully integrated, plantation to product to pre-fabrication model that is scalable, investable and nationally replicable.

Staged Delivery of Engineered Wood Capability

Focused on Portland in south west Victoria, Phase 1 of The Precinct will deliver a sawline supporting the manufacture of Glue Laminated Timber (GLT or glulam), while Phase 2 will introduce a veneer mill to facilitate manufacture of Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) for the Australian market. Phase 3 will focus on an integrated  pre-fabrication facility, manufacturing a range of timber-based dwelling components.

PHASE 1: GLT (Glulam)

PHASE 2: LVL

PHASE 3: Pre-fabrication

The Precinct will produce most of its own energy, powered by an integrated biomass energy plant.

Backed by the Federal Government’s Australian Forest and Wood Innovations, and the Victorian State Government, and supported by leading businesses in the Australian supply chain, this multi-million dollar development activity is delivering turn-key feasibility studies and proof of concept to support generational regional investment.

Why The Precinct Matters

“The Precinct model delivers the system from plantation to products to prefabricated dwelling components in an integrated hub in the heart of the Green Triangle”.

Australia is at a critical point in its housing and manufacturing journey.

Demand for new homes continues to grow, while expectations around speed, affordability and carbon performance are rising. At the same time, Australia imports close to $1 billion of engineered wood products each year; materials that could be manufactured locally from certified plantation timber.

The Precinct is designed to bridge that gap; integrating plantation fibre, advanced manufacturing and prefabrication in a single hub in Portland to strengthen sovereign capability and capture value locally.

Our Fabricated Future

The Precinct is a place-based response to national challenges.

It builds on the Green Triangle’s strengths to support housing delivery, strengthen sovereign manufacturing and create a more resilient, future-focused timber industry … one that keeps more value onshore and delivers long-term benefits for regional communities and the nation.
